All the world’s a stage is the theme behind this wonderful tour taking in the top cultural and natural sights of the north Kumamoto region.

First we visit the town of Yamaga home to a wonderful Meiji era Kabuki theatre, your guide will translate as a specialist guide shows you around. Decribing the mysteries of the revolving stage and hidden trap doors as well as the history of the theatre and its restoration to its former glory.

Yamaga town is known all over Japan for its lantern festival which takes place every summer in Obon. You will visit the lantern museum to see examples of this meticulous craft and watch an artisan at work. You can also try on a paper lantern head dress for size. After strolling around the atmospheric old town and getting something to eat you will spend the afternoon taking in the nature and waterfalls of the Kikuchi Valley, a must see for any nature lovers or keen photographers.

Yachiyoza Theatre – a fascinating tour of the oldest and most beautifully restored Kabuki theatre in Kyushu. If you are not a fan of Kabuki before you will be by the end!

Yamaga old town – enjoy a stroll around the atmospheric Edo era shopping streets of Yamaga.

Yamaga Lantern Museum – watch the paper lantern craftsmen at work on this exquisite art unique to the area.

Kikuchi Castle – an archealogical site dating back 1,300 years the castle tower has been recently restored to its former glory.

Kikuchi Valley – walk along one of the most beautiful river valleys in Japan, a photographer’s paradise of lush green nature, moss and waterfalls.

Optional activity:

Take a hot spring bath in the Kumamoto Lords’ favourite onsen.

The tour activities could be taken as 2 separate half day tours: half day Yamaga sights, half day Kikuchi sights

The standard tour begins and ends in Kumamoto City, however an Aso drop off is possible if that is your next destination, as the road past Kikuchi valley leads to the caldera rim. Please contact for details.
