Takachiho and Mount Aso Tour Itinerary

Departing from Higo Ozu Station we journey through the remote and pastoral Minami Aso region. On the way we take in beautiful views of the southern Aso caldera and arrive in Takachiho around 10am. Of course we are happy to stop for photos on the way.

The early start means we are sure to get the best views of the gorge before the crowds arrive.

Down in the gorge, you have the option to go rowing, view the amazing rock features and get as close (as you like!) to the beautiful Manai waterfall, an experience not to be missed.

(Don’t worry, the river is very calm and only very, very basic rowing skills are needed!)

We then enjoy a walk along the Takachiho gorge, admiring the views and learning some of the ancient Shinto myths connected to the Takachiho area.

For lunch we usually visit a charming and unique restaurant specialising in Nagashi Soumen, a popular Japanese summer dish which originated in Takachiho. The fast flowing noodles are a challenge for your chopstick skills and a lot of fun to eat!

After lunch we spend the afternoon exploring the northern Aso region.

Arriving in northern Aso we take a spectacular 30 minute drive up into the central Aso volcanic peaks known as Asozan or Mount Aso.

On route we will take in views of the picturesque horses and Akaushi cattle grazing the mountain sides, and the caldera wall in the distance.

We also stop to view Neko Dake, the oldest and craggiest volcano (above)

and Komezuka, the youngest and possibly prettiest one.

On the top of Mount Aso we will stop at Kusasenri, a huge grassy plateau from where we can enjoy a short hike and get stunning views of the live volcano and the caldera below.

If the Nakadake Volcano is at level 1 you will be able to visit the edge of the crater itself to see the lunar landscape and get a glimpse into its steaming, turquoise crater lake.

We will finish our day by heading out of the Aso region via the Milk Road.  The road winds through the grasslands along the edge of the northern caldera wall offering panoramic views of Mount Aso. If time allows we will visit Daikanbo, where we can grab an icecream and walk to the highest viewpoint on the caldera wall. From here the mountains of Mount aso are said to resemble the form of a sleeping Buddha.

If we are running short of time don’t worry there are also more accessible viewpoints which offer wonderful views too.

The tour finishes with a drop off back at Higo Ozu Station around 17:30 from where it is a short train ride back to Kumamoto City.
