A surprising benefit of living in a volcanic area is a huge supply of clean, cold  underground mineral water. The water bubbles up in a variety of springs particularly plentiful in the Aso region but also the source of the Ezuko lakes in Kumamoto City and Suizenji Gardens. Even th tap water in Kumamoto is delicious as that is also from the underground aquifiers.
