Minami Aso

If you are travelling from Kumamoto to Takachiho or Gokase you will pass through the beautiful Minami Aso or Southern Aso area. The charm of the countryside, stunning views, relaxing hotsprings and the simple, traditional rural way of life that can still be found in this area makes the area a popular destination for the Japanese.

minami asoThe Minami Aso area offers some interesting hot springs including the infamous Jigoku Onsen – the Hell Hot Spring, fresh water springs also abound bringing some of Japan’s purest spring water to the area. Two of Japan’s top 100 fresh water springs lie in this area, one of them the source of the Shirakawa river that runs through Kumamoto City.

Walking or cycling along the caldera bottom, onsen or spring hopping or just enjoying the lush farmland and sleepy villages is a popular past time. Horse riding is also a popular activity. Several hiking routes pass up and along the caldera wall or into the central Mount Aso region.

The area is a popular retreat for artisans and craftsmen, and there are many small boutique style cafes, restaurants, lodgings and craft based shops to visit.

Getting around

The Minami Aso region is serviced by a small private and very scenic railway that runs from Tateno in the west to Takamori in the east.

For greater flexibility get around by rental car or bicycle.

Travel Tip

If you are visiting Kusasenri from the northern half of the caldera afterwards drive towards Nakadake then turn right and drive down the southern route into Minami Aso for some wonderful views. Following this route you can also visit the beautiful Shirakawa Source.
